You don’t have to be a poet or novelist to achieve this—there are literary craft tools you can acquire to make your writing more memorable and personally rewarding. This workshop will borrow from tools employed by narrative nonfiction writers, especially literary journalists, to help you produce more richly textured accounts of social life and human experience. How might you narrate an idea, a social reality or an experience? You will learn and apply strategies such as point of view, character development, scene construction, dialogue, and story structure. You will explore larger questions including, what makes good writing good, and what makes it last? Is it possible to pursue social inquiry through storytelling? How might you reach general audiences and communicate beyond your field of specialty? A maximum of eight scholars from across disciplines will meet on Zoom over the course of two months, discussing readings and sharing writing for feedback. Whether you want to write a personal narrative or simply incorporate stories in your scholarly writing, this workshop will get you on that path. I’ve been a writer-at-large at Texas Monthly since 2000, and have contributed to Harper’s Magazine, The New York Times, and the Columbia Journalism Review, among other publications. My passion for history, culture and journalism began in high school, when I wrote my first paper on Tejano history and began reporting for The Brownsville Herald, in my hometown along the U.S.-Mexico border.
